Transforming Anger: A Natural Path to Emotional Wellbeing

Have you ever hit rock bottom? Lost your job right when things were looking up, been robbed, experienced a heartbreak, been betrayed by a friend, or seen a project you cared deeply about fail? I'm going through that right now, and I must say that at the ripe age of 51, I'm feeling a decisive change. The anger is there, but instead of lashing out, I can feel every cell in my body finally moving beyond the fight-or-flight mode. I can truly feel an energetic flow, not tension but pulsation, from the tips of my toes to the top of my head. It's amazing! On the other hand, as Italians say, 'Every cloud has a silver lining!'

Transforming Anger

What have I done? First, I wished the best for people who, without much ethics or compassion, acted solely out of excessive personal ambition. Second, I immediately started looking for a solution. Third, I meditated and breathed deeply to create distance from this inner tension, continuing to wish them well. Fourth, I put on a rock song and sang at the top of my lungs.

I then reflected on how I can help my clients transform their anger in a constructive and positive way, without suppressing it or letting it burn inside. In our green space, which we are creating with Wild Mindset Coaching, I have devised a series of outdoor workshops to help people manage and transform their anger.

Anger, a universal emotion, can trigger a cascade of negative reactions if not managed correctly. Numerous scientific studies, including those published by the American Psychological Association (APA) and in specialized journals such as Emotion and Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, show that unmanaged anger can damage interpersonal relationships, physical health, and psychological well-being.

I've attended several helpful anger workshops:

  1. Safe Plate Breaking: A cathartic activity where participants can break plates in a safe and controlled environment. This symbolic gesture helps release pent-up negative emotions. This type of workshop has gained popularity in many cities as a form of alternative therapy.
  2. Free Screaming in Nature: In a secluded corner of our green space, participants can scream freely, letting go of all tension and frustration. The surrounding nature offers a relaxing context that helps to rebalance emotions. Studies have shown that screaming can be an effective way to release stress and accumulated tension.
  3. Wild Dance: A workshop where participants are encouraged to dance freely, following the rhythm of the music and letting their bodies express emotions freely. This frantic dance helps to vent anger and transform it into positive energy. Dance is recognized for its psychological and physical benefits, helping to improve mood and reduce stress.
  4. Emotional Painting: By providing canvases and colors, participants can express their anger through art. Painting with broad and decisive gestures allows emotions to be transformed into visual creations, promoting understanding and acceptance of one's feelings. Art therapy is a well-established practice for managing emotions.
  5. Sensory Path: Walking barefoot on different types of terrain (sand, grass, stones) stimulates the senses and helps to ground oneself in the present. This practice, combined with breathing exercises, can reduce tension and promote a sense of inner calm. Connection with nature has been shown to be beneficial for mental well-being.
